Village Celebrations on the Island of Gozo
From May to September, Gozo comes alive with a series of street festivals celebrating the patron saints of individual villages. These village feasts, known as festi, are a true experience and usually last around three days, sometimes even a week. Locals dress in the colors of their patron saints and flock to the village center to join the festivities. There are about ten major feasts, typically taking place over a weekend – starting with a Friday parade and culminating in the official celebration of the saint’s day on Sunday. The festivities end with a breathtaking fireworks display.
Before the 16th century, these celebrations were held inside churches. But when Malta was ruled by the Knights of St. John, Grand Master de Rohan – famous for his love of parties – transformed them into open-air celebrations of food, music, and dancing. Today, there is fierce competition between towns, each trying to outdo the other. The confetti on the streets clearly shows which town is hosting a feast that week.
In neighboring towns, preparations are already underway for their own celebration – flags, lights, and statues are being mounted. Church façades are adorned with festive lighting, banners, and decorations that cover the town center. The unique personality of each village is reflected in its lively decorations and vibrant atmosphere. It’s truly an extraordinary experience.
